Facing nearly a dozen sexual misconduct allegations and a completed investigation by the State Attorney General, three-term Governor Andrew Cuomo announced in August that he would be stepping down.
After multiple women stepped forward earlier this year accusing Governor Andrew Cuomo of sexual misconduct, State Attorney General Letitia James conducted an independent investigation that concluded that the Governor sexually harassed 11 women between 2013 and 2020.
Despite initially refusing to step down, calls from major Democratic leaders throughout the country, including President Joe Biden, prompted Cuomo to formally announce his resignation on August 10th as calls for impeachment proceedings began to gain steam. Governor Cuomo officially stepped down on August 24th, allowing Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul to officially become the first female governor of New York State.
During his 11 years as governor, Cuomo was known as a staunch tenant ally and often targeted rental property owners. Over his first two terms, a change in political demographics throughout New York allowed the State rent laws to drastically change over time when finally in 2019, Governor Cuomo reached his crowning achievement as a pro-tenant governor when he signed the Housing Stability and Tenant Protection Act of 2019 (HSTPA) into law, the most anti-owner laws in New York State history.
Although RSA does not have much of a working relationship with Governor Hochul, we look forward to engaging in constructive dialogue with the new governor and her administration that will allow our industry voice to be heard once again. For now, Governor Hochul will serve out the remainder of this term, which will conclude at the end of 2022. At this juncture, it is unknown as to whether or not Governor Hochul will seek re-election.
